Excellent read. I totally got lost in that. I was never big into social media and never signed up for tik tok because I spent most of my time -- okay, ALL of my time -- writing. I never did all those other things either. Just Facebook, but that was so I could be in contact with my daughter while she went to Thailand.
It's not just that I'm old, I just didn't care. I mean, I still don't have a phone. So now, I guess you could say I'm playing catch up. I came here almost three years ago, having retired, and haven't looked back. I can't relate to all of those other platforms. I was never into blogging, or had a website. All I've ever done on my computer, was write. Now I want to be a creative, not a creator in that concept of the word, but creative, spreading my wings and trying new things.
I like this idea of visual journaling, but have enough on my plate with reading my stories and trying to convince the wife in taking part In it with me. But if this is an example of what you have to offer, I'm in. All the way.
As someone who recently left Meta, I can say I definitely lost my community. They shouldn’t have the amount of power over us that they do. The forced following of accounts, the removal of content that they don’t agree with that isn’t actually offensive at all, just doesn’t agree with their goals, etc. I’m extremely glad Substack and others like it exist for the simple reason that we can find new community, and that’s beautiful.
Thanks for bringing this conversation forward and connecting complex words like interoperability to the lineage of the internet. It’s paradigm translations like this that will get more people to realize that most of us want to cocreate the same (or similar enough) world.
TikTok was the only platform that didn't censor anti-genocide voices. It was community but it was also real news like the US used to have during the Vietnam war. The only way to learn about the toddlers with US-supplied bullets in their heads and bellies.
That is simply not true—TikTok has been prolific in censoring content surrounding Gaza and still is. I’ve seen creators talking about Gaza under the guise of how-to craft videos in order to try to avoid shadow bans. Their censorship has only intensified after the US election.
definitely something that we are needing to pay attention to. Who holds the power and what does that do to us?
May I say I also really enjoy how you make a little video or your Substack for us. People who have short attention spans, and have been corrupted by the TikTok era lol. Kudos.
Great points! But there is actually another way to go, dare I say...more effective way to solve the problems you raise...and more! Look at what I'm doing right now. Let me know what you think about this approach.
The fear people feel leaving these walled communities is also troubling and plays on people’s emotions. Loss of community can upend us - which is exactly why our government is doing what they’re doing btw. Writing on Substack was an easy shift for me. It’s a reciprocal relationship. Not take, destroy, take. But build, connect, grow.
Maybe centralized kingdoms of power and influence aren’t the answer!
I’ve seen individuals host creative Zoom sessions with 45+ people spanning several time zones.
I see artists speaking directly with their fans with reliable email lists, selling tickets and albums in the process.
Now imagine if all these pockets of culture and art and magic started organizing and working together.

I like your way of thinking.
I also like the littre HitRECord red circle at the end of your video.
I don't have time to go on the platform to explore the creations of the members and create some of my own anymore.
But when you pop up in my emails? I take the time.
Thank you for reminding me that communities are as important as work. (And more important than social media.)

Important concept !

I’ve loved your movies since I was nine years old, and I’m pleased to find that I love your writings as a soon-to-be 18-year-old.
Terrific article, Joe. I read this one over on HitRECord.
Power to the many!!
