Thanks for speaking up and asking the right questions- what are the morals! What a concept in today’s world.

Haas's avatar

Asking what the morals are is the only question that matters. Every civilization that stopped asking it discovered the answer too late.

Most of us draw a line well before the horrific stuff we’re hearing about. Most of us would NOT ever attack another human unless physically threatened.

Sure most would like a bit more money for security, but not stealing, no grifting, no cheating.

As always Joe speaks with such authority and grace that you just have to listen and take note.

We need protective measures all over the world to protect our children and their future - it is starting with social media in Australia, Spain is following suit and the UK is in consultation.

Ai is next - look at the horrible things Grok has been able to make and the billionaire behind it doesn't care and calls people names that seem to oppose it - because that is their mentality, when people 'don't bend the knee' they use aggression and lies to distract attention away from the real issues.

I am glad there are places in the US that are having this discussion - often the UK follows suit shortly after - I hope sooner rather than later.

Thanks Joe for your drive to keep these companies in line and protect our and our children's future.

Haas's avatar

The billionaire who calls critics names when they refuse to kneel has merely automated what every petty tyrant has done by hand: confuse submission with respect, and wealth with wisdom. Technology changes. The pathology does not.

Paul - The Calm Coach's avatar

Yep - every narcissistic trait will show up in almost every billionaire…I will have to have a long and hard search to find one that doesn’t show those traits. Thanks Haas!

Michele Lott's avatar

It requires a certain amount of narcissism to achieve high ambitions, yet one can still maintain self-awareness and a moral compass. I think of Warren Buffett, Mark Cuban, Scott Galloway.

Paul - The Calm Coach's avatar

Absolutely - you can see the narcissistic traits in all of them….that selfishness but you are so right - shouldn’t mean a huge deviation from societies moral compass….but ultimate power corrupts absolutely.

Michele Lott's avatar

Yes, the narcissism is staggering and obscene. They consider themselves the Class of Untouchables.

Reeves Hughes's avatar

gordon-levitt is a cheerleader for the complete enshittification of social media…and nothing more.

Mary Evelyn Conner's avatar

What?!? He is trying to clean it up, without using AI, the actual shitification of the internet. Additionally, he is trying to unshitify the earth. It sounds like you are a cheerleader for the complete enshitification of the earth. I haven’t heard a human, yet, that cheered water waste, that will lead to a massive water crisis(in less than 10yrs, at this rate). You should be ashamed of yourself.

Reeves Hughes's avatar

when all social media has become like the bastard love child of the new tiktok and cbs news, let’s talk again.

as far as the water thing goes, nice try. i’m as anti-AI as anyone out there, but it’s an issue peripheral to the attempt to wring free speech out of social media. simply breaking up zuck’s rancid monopoly will go further toward reversing the enshittification brought on by network effects than the draconian overreach being proposed by gordon-levitt.

those who would trade liberty for security will find themselves having neither.

Zamboomafool's avatar

You realize you are being ironic, right ?

Paul - The Calm Coach's avatar

Not catching your drift? Can you explain please?

Zamboomafool's avatar

Joe is an actor, who is playing the part of the concerned citizen. What this bill actually does is allow ID verification to be utilized to stop anominimity online, as well as elimimate freedom of expression. This is a slippery slope into total fascism, disguised as - save the children. Im sorry, when has children ever been the proirity ? These people perform austerity, they dont give a shit about kids. Theyll do this, but god forbid they collectively come together to actually make an impact, that benefits childrens live as a whole. When you cut social investments, thats directly targeting kids. So please, before you buy the propaganda, read the fine print.

Paul - The Calm Coach's avatar

So what you are saying is that this 'bill' is a backdoor to allowing ID verification online?

I don't understand the link between Ai and the ID verification.

If you can provide evidence of this, as in the fine print you mentioned, then please share it.

Also I don't see where I am being ironic? Is this an Alanis Morrisette irony or actual irony?

Zamboomafool's avatar

HB 286 targets section 230, therefore threatening freespeech.

The framework of the bill and the language is a slippery slope that can lead to google demanding age verification, through govt issued ID. All you have to do is google my claims, Im not making this shit up. I just dont feel like going through the entire bill, bit by bit to prove it. Theres been plenty of youtube commentary on this entire thing.

Considering the way that the U.S. government is using data to single out minority groups and the trans community, I'm with you in believing this isn't a net positive like it's being made out to be.

Paul - The Calm Coach's avatar

well its a good job I live in the uk and not US where age verification is already in place for adult websites - funnily enough - to protect children.

I’m sure those YouTubers know their verified stuff and will fight the good fight - you go girl!

Im so sorry 😞 you're all having to see this you dad's out there. You moms probably had already arriv3s at this point, men smart, women smarter. Im only putting that way because Im a male whose different, still wish I had children.

Thank you for coming to Utah, our legislature needs to hear more common sense like this.

He supports the Republican party which opposes all of this. He's never run a business, lol. Being a celebrity name attached to something is not a business. It's crazy how you folks are so easily controlled.

Esteban Isaiah Nazario's avatar

Where are you getting that he supports the Republican party?

Who is controlling anyone here? lol I don’t think you know what that word means.

Jaye Fowler's avatar

The problem is the wealthy don't care about the public good. We aren't part of their public.

Zenitram's avatar

You only care about “the public” in so far that you are a brokie and only consider brokies part of “the public”.

Jaye Fowler's avatar

This is actually the stupidest thing I’ve read today. Congratulations.

Zenitram's avatar

You literally admitted as much when you suggested "the wealthy" are outside of "the public" by not caring. You're a clown. Typical female hypocrite. Says something retarded, cannot connect A to B, says people who do are dumb.

Jaye Fowler's avatar

And in case it wasn’t totally clear, because I understand reading comprehension might not be your strongest suit, I stand by my original statement. The wealthy only consider those among their tax bracket as their equals. I, however, believe every person should be responsible for the community that helps create their wealth (tangible or otherwise). That’s the basic bare minimum requirement of the social contract. The 1% seem to have forgotten that, quite like the French nobility did once before, and I for one can’t wait to see how this turns out for them as the general populace wakes up to the reality of the wealth gap.

Jaye Fowler's avatar

Oh look guys.. another dude on the internet thinking he knows everything about everyone and about how they think. If I had a nickel for every one of you I’d be a billionaire too.

Zenitram's avatar

Septum piercing, black lipstick. You’re a harpy honey. Your opinions are retarded.

Jaye Fowler's avatar

Oh my gosh! You've nailed me with one photo. My goodness. How could it ever be so easy?

AJ's avatar

Thank you for using your voice and platform to do the right thing.

Haas's avatar

Using a platform for something beyond self promotion is so rare now that it registers as heroism. That is not a compliment to the speaker. It is an indictment of every public figure who chose silence when it was cheaper.

Janet's avatar

More laws governing making sandwiches than AI. That says it all. Until this country quits worshipping money above everything else, there will be much harm. This thread runs through virtually everything that is wrong here. Just how many billions to these selfish people need? What are the morals? That is the question. Thank you.

Haas's avatar

More laws governing sandwiches than artificial intelligence is not regulatory failure. It is regulatory capture working exactly as designed. The industries writing the fewest rules are the ones writing the largest checks.

The Galactic Writer's avatar

Thank you for speaking up and using your platform to create meaningful media and change. Sending strength and love to you and your family. And to everyone here.💜

Haas's avatar

Strength is the right word. Despair is easy, rage is reflexive, but sustained attention to injustice when looking away is free requires something more deliberate. That is the only kind of resistance that outlasts the news cycle.

You might be better off producing a Don Jon sequel.
