Honestly, as a witness to you in the process of creating is an art in and of itself. It's all about the process, not the product. Thanks for sharing moments of such experiences
Joe, thanks for sharing this. My college students struggle with perfectionism, and I can't wait to share this with them! There is joy in developing, improvising, finding your way - like we did when we were little kids!
I think the process is part of the biggest part. Being in the studio is where it’s at. Making that great music. Hit record hit album. I mean when you see Justin in studio making justified. You realize they are actually making a classic. But they are just in the process of working. Getting the singing right. The drums as you show Justin the recording the sound. Piano Neptunes do it. So brotha you are right there. In terms of how studio sessions go. Justin and Pharrell were doing it. Process leads to art being made. This all starts in singing lessons. What I will say about Cowboy Carter it had to be made. Where we are at now? We need it. We needed this album. And having Beyonce and Miley on a record together. Was powerful stuff. Where we are at. This was perfect to show these two on a record together. Unified. And music wise it’s a great record. Great stuff Joesph. Keep writing about the music would be good to get your reviews on some other genres. You know yesterday was the release and debut of Nevermind another great classic. Thanks brotha.
I love this. "You could probably get AI to add drums...but why?" - exactly. The process of creating is what feels good. I've spent countless hours learning to draw over the past couple of years, and to begin with, it was all about the result, and whether I got it "right". But now, when I see how I'm getting better, little by little, sketch by sketch, that's where the magic is. Thanks for this reminder, Joe.
Also, what you said about music being about the people always reminds of this Ani Drifranco quote:
"People used to make records, as in a record of an event, the event of people Playing music in a room."
i find teaching kids to explore different ways to get the skill right is best, the very words do it again makes them only see the fail, make it more fun and have them play a game.
Leave them to learn what possible ways works. The more they understand the better they do, like standing at the back of a cave you only see so much, stand to the front and you get the entire view.
There is the other side, where they fail, they always learn something that helps them later, one action I do believe leads to another life event you never stand still because you have to keep leaping.
Great points, Joe! As a creative myself, your post really resonated with me.
"That’s, I guess, the point I want to make is that part of the point of music or movies or shows or storytelling or art, creativity, whatever you want to call it, part of the point is just to do it. And that’s it. Just because it’s fun to do it." Agreed! I have a long way to go with improving my writing and drawing, but I draw and write because I love doing both activities :). Having fun is key.
Really appreciate you taking the time to share the deeper aspects of what drives you as an artist and the daily struggles you face, just like any of us do, even though you've found such (well-deserved) success. It's so relatable and inspiring.
I love the rehearsal process of doing things over and over till they’re polished. I love the creative process, yet when it comes to repetitive, mundane tasks of daily life like chores and errands, I’m like 🤮 It’s so great to see you so happy in this post, made my day
Love this so much! The point of creativity is to create and enjoy the process

We all have to practice something.
